Description:
General plumage olive-brown; forehead, lores, front of crown, ear-coverts and forward cheek area mauve-blue; ear-coverts with dull yellowish streaking; remainder of head, back and lower back olive-grey; throat and upper breast dull olive-brown, each feather washed pale brown; lower breast, sides of abdomen and under tail-coverts yellow; patch to abdomen and parts of thigh deep red; bend of wing, primary-coverts, outer webs of primaries and under wing-coverts violet-blue; shoulder feathers and outer lesser wing-coverts blue; median, inner lesser wing-coverts and inner secondary-coverts olive; outer secondary-coverts olive with broad blue marking; rump and upper tail-coverts olive; upperside of middle tail-feathers bronze-green with dark blue tips, outer tail-feathers dark-blue with whitish-blue tips; tail underside white-bluish; bill grey-horn colour; narrow periophthalmic ring grey; iris grey-brown; feet grey-brown.
Female as male, but with duller blue facial area; red to abdomen and thighs much less extensive; white under-wing stripe; head and bill on average smaller.
Immatures as adults, but with much duller plumage; much less red to abdomen and thighs; under-wing stripe
present; adult plumage attained by 12 months.

Description: As Blue-bonnet Parrots (haematogaster) - above, but plumage generally much paler brown-grey; forehead, lores and area over eye greenish-blue; no red to abdomen and thighs; under tail-coverts red; bend of wing and shoulder feathers greenish-blue to pale mauve-blue; outer lesser wing-coverts orange-red; rump, upper tail-coverts, inner lesser and median wing-coverts pale olive-yellow; upperside of middle tail-feathers olive with blue tips; on average slightly smaller. Female as male, but with slightly duller plumage; facial area duller blue; head and bill generally smaller. Immatures as adults, but with slightly duller plumage; adult plumage attained by 12 months.
