Brown TealThe Brown Teal (Anas chlorotis) is a species of dabbling duck of the genus Anas.

It was formerly called Anas aucklandica and comprised of three subspecies:

  • New Zealand Teal A. a. chlorotis

  • Auckland Islands Teal A. a. aucklandica : The Auckland Islands Teal (Anas aucklandica) is a species of dabbling duck of the genus Anas that is endemic to Auckland Islands off New Zealand. An old report of "the same flightless duck" on North East Island, The Snares group (Hector, 1896) most likely refers to a straggler.

  • Campbell Island Teal A. a. nesiotis

The Brown Teal species has been split, recognizing that the insular subspecies aucklandica and nesiotis are good species. In international use, the name Brown Teal is more common than New Zealand Teal for this bird.

It is endangered and occurs only on offshore islands. Formerly, it was widespread on the New Zealand mainland, but it disappeared there due to introduced predators like cats, dogs and rats, which easily preyed on this flightless bird.
