Escherichia Coli (E-coli)
Back to Diseases or Bird Health Care
Coliform infections occur regularly in captive as well as wild birds, and can be either gastro-intestinal or respiratory in nature. While E. coli is a normal part of the gut flora in many birds, it can become pathogenic at times of stress.
Symptoms: unwillingness to eat, loss of body condition and severe vomiting or diarrhoea.
Route of Infection & Prevention:
- Wild Birds: Outbreaks are best prevented by keeping all feeding areas and water containers clean and free from droppings.
- Domesticated Birds: Maintain meticulously clean bird areas; provide clean food and water; maintain a stress-free environment. May require antibiotics, as advised by your veterinarian.
