Enggano Mynas or Enggano Hill Mynas

Myna Information & Species ... Myna Photo Gallery ... Hill Myna "Mocha" Growing Up (Photos, Blog & Movie)

Photo Wanted The Enggano Myna or Enggano Hill Myna (Gracula enganensis) is a member of the starling family. It is an endemic resident of Enggano Island, west of southern tip of Sumatra.

Description

The Enggano Myna has bright orange-yellow patches of naked skin and fleshy yellow wattles (loose folds of skin) on the side of its head and nape.

It has overall turquoise-glossed black plumage, purple-tinged on the head and neck. There are large white wing patches which are obvious in flight. The thick bill and strong legs are bright yellow.

At about 27 cm or 10.5 inches in length, it is somewhat smaller than the Indian Hill Myna. The feathers on the sides of forehead are larger and directed upwards to form tufts at the base of the upper mandible. It also has a shorter stubbier bill.

Behaviour

The bird is arboreal, and is found mainly along forest edges. Like most starlings, the Enggano Myna is fairly omnivorous, eating fruit, nectar and insects.
