Chlamydophila Psittaci (Parrot Fever)

Conjunctivitis is not a typical symptom of Parrot Fever, but it is a symptom that occasionally occurs in birds suffering from Parrot Fever. Primary symptoms would be an upper respiratory infection with nasal and/ or ocular (eye) discharge, diarrhea with the possibility of conjunctivitis and other symptoms. Avian Conjunctivitis:

Infected birds typically show various degrees of crusty thickened growths around the eyes. In extreme cases, these growths can completely cover the eye. Eyes are often reddish, watery as well. Birds with conjunctivitis may also suffer from associated respiratory problems, which can result in death. (Please refer to the photo at the bottom)

Conjunctivitis can be caused by a number of factors, to including injuries, bacteria, fungi, nematodes, and protozoa. Diagnostic testing is necessary to determine exactly what causes each case of conjunctivitis.

Avian Pox

Coryza (common cold)

A disease affecting chicken, pheasants, guinea fowl, turkeys and other game birds. Common symptoms: Respiratory distress accompanied by watery and swollen eyes.

Herpes Virus Infection

House Finch Eye Disease, also known as Mycoplasmal Conjunctivitis:

Originally affected mainly domestic turkeys and chickens, but has been observed in House Finches since the 1990s and also affects several other species, including - but not limited to - American Goldfinch, Evening Grosbeak, and Purple Finch, to a lesser degree. Symptoms: Infected birds may have red, swollen, runny or crusty eyes. In severe cases, the eyes become swollen shut..

Laryngotracheitis:

Affects fowls, pheasants and turkeys. Water fowl, such as ducks and geese, show no signs, but ducks are known to carry ILT. Wild birds may act as carriers. Early symptoms may include bouts of hard swallowing, ruffled feathers on the back of the head, squinting and watering of one or both eyes, known as conjunctivitis.

Mycoplasma infection:

Swollen, red, runny eyes in combiation with respiratory signs and tail-bobbing,

BookSalmonellosis / Salmonella:

Sick birds may appear thin, fluffed up, and may have swollen eyelids. They are often lethargic and easy to handle. Click here for more info.

Toxins:

Exposure / inhalation of cigarette, cigar and pipe smoke by birds can cause chronic eye problems, skin irritation and respiratory disease.
