Featured Bird Photograph: Eclectus Female

Other Featured Bird Photos

Below are interesting facts about the Eclectus. Please scroll down for featured photo and information about the photographer:

  • As male Eclectuses are mostly bright green while females are mainly red, they were considered two separate species due to the extreme differences in their coloration, which is uncommon in the parrot world. In 1874, Dr. A. B. Meiljer of the National Museum of Natural History discovered that males are green and the females of this species are red.
  • Eclectus were once worshipped as sacred birds because of their ornate colors.
