Bird Species Found In New Caledonia
Chronic deforestation because of many years of nickel mining are evident in the Southern hills and mountains.
However, endemic birds and other animals can still be found in the protected protected forest patches at Rivière Bleue and Mount Koghi. Visitors also enjoy the lovely scenery and beautiful beaches. Isle of Pines (Ile de Pins) - in the south - is also popular with birders.
Australasian Bittern (Botaurus poiciloptilus), also known as the Brown Bittern - Range: South-western and south-eastern Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, New Caledonia and Ouvea
Barred Honeyeater (Phylidonyris undulata): Fairly common in the drier heath areas at Rivière Bleu and Mt. Koghi
Beach Stone-curlews (Esacus giganteus) - Range: It is uncommon over most of its range, which includes coastal eastern Australia as far south as far eastern Victoria, the northern Australian coast and nearby islands, New Guinea, New Caledonia, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines
Brown Goshawk (Accipiter fasciatus) - Range: Australia, Tasmania, Wallacea, New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji
Cloven-feathered Dove (Drepanoptila holosericea) - A rare find - said to be found at Rivière-Bleue and Mt. Koghi
Channel-billed Cuckoo (Scythrops novaehollandiae) - Range: Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia; additionally, it is vagrant in New Caledonia and New Zealand
Coenocorypha also known as the New Zealand snipes - Range: Outlying Islands of New Zealand. Formerly could be found in Fiji and New Caledonia, across New Zealand and down into New Zealand's sub-Antarctic islands, but predation by introduced species has drastically declined their range

Fan-tailed Cuckoos (Cacomantis flabelliformis) - Range: Australia, Fiji, Indonesia, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu.
Grey Fantails (Rhipidura fuliginosa) - Range: Common in all parts of Australia except western desert areas. Also found in New Zealand (where it is also known by its Maori name, Piwakawaka or Tiwakawaka), New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia
Great Frigatebirds (Fregata minor) - Range: In the Pacific Ocean Hawaii is the northernmost extent of their range. In the Central and South Pacific colonies are found on most islands Groups from Wake Island to the Galapagos Islands to New Caledonia with a few pairs nesting on Australian possessions in the Coral Sea. Colonies are also found on numerous Indian Ocean islands including Aldabra, Christmas Island and Mauritius. The small populations in the Western Atlantic Ocean may still persist but are very small if they do. Great Frigatebirds undertake regular migrations across their range, both regular trips and more infrequent widespread dispersals. Birds marked with wing tags on Tern Island in French Frigate Shoals were found to regularly travel to Johnston Atoll (873 km), one was reported in Quezon City in the Philippines.

New Caledonian Parakeet (Cyanoramphus saisetti) - Endemic to New Caledonia. This species was once considered to be conspecific (of, or belonging to, the same species) with the Red-fronted Kakariki of New Zealand but is now considered a full species. It is much yellower beneath than Red-fronted Parakeet.

New Caledonian Whistler (Pachycephala caledonica): Fairly common in the forests of Rivière Bleue and Mount Koghi.. Found on Grande Terre and the Île des Pins. Inhabits humid forest, including degraded forest and forest edges, from sea level up to 1000 m. Medium-sized bird, averaging 14-16 cm in length and weighing 18-25 g. The plumage of the male is dark slate-grey crown, face and nape, a white throat, yellow belly and rump and olive back and wings with a thin black line between the throat and belly. The female is duller than the male with a buff belly and rump, no line between the throat and belly, and an olive-brown head, back and wings. The legs of the male are dark brown, those of the female are lighter brown.

Roseate Tern (Sterna dougallii) - Range: The tropical forms, S. d. korustes and S. d. bangsi, are resident breeders from east Africa across the Indian Ocean to Japan. They have more red on the bill. The long-billed and short-winged form (S. d. gracilis) breeds in Australia and New Caledonia
Shining Bronze-Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx lucidus / Chalcites lucidus) - Range: Australia, Indonesia, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu
Small Lifou White-eye (Zosterops minutus): These bright yellow, small birds are very common on Lifou
Striated Starling (Aplonis striata) - Fairly common
Swamp Harriers or Australasian Harrier (C. approximans) - Range: Australasia, particularly in the higher rainfall areas to the east, south-east, and south-west, of Australia and throughout New Zealand, but also in the tropical north of Australia, and the island groups to the east of the Coral Sea, New Caledonia and Vanuatu
Whistling Kite (Haliastur sphenurus) - Range: Australia, New Caledonia and much of New Guinea
White-bellied Goshawk (Accipiter haplochrous): A scarce endemic in the protected areas of New Caledonia
White-browed Crakes (Porzana cinerea) - Found in Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, Fiji, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Micronesia, New Caledonia, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Thailand and Vanuatu.
Yellow-bellied Robin (Eopsaltria flaviventris) - Common in the forest at Rivière Bleue; on the Isle of Pines along the track to Pic Nga
Zebra Doves (Geopelia striata, also called Barred Ground Dove) - Range: Malay Peninsula, Sunda Islands and the Philippines. Introduced into New Caledonia.
