The Palawan Peacock Pheasant, Polyplectron napoleonis - also known as Napoleon Peacock Pheasant - is a shy and elusive bird that is endemic to the humid forests of Palawan Island in the Philippines Archipelago.
Due to declining habitat and exploitation, the Palawan Peacock Pheasant is evaluated as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and is listed on Appendix I of CITES.
Description:
This medium-sized pheasant is up to 20 inches (~50cm long). The male is the most beautiful and peacock-like member of genus Polyplectron. His tail feathers are decorated with large blue-green ocelli, which may be spread fan-like in courtship display. He has an erectile crest, white stripe over eye, and highly iridescence metallic green and black plumage.
The female is far less striking, with an overall dark brown plumage, a short crest, whitish throat, cheeks and eyebrow.
