The Rufous-chested Sparrowhawk (Accipiter rufiventris) is found in the African countries of Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
It forms a superspecies with Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) and possibly Madagascar Sparrowhawk (Accipiter madagascariensis) (Ferguson-Lees and Christie 2001).
