Tips & Tricks: Your "cuddly bird" may also enjoy plush toys -- anything that is safe for human babies ought to be safe for them (use your own judgment though -- depending on how your bird "uses and abuses" the toy you may want to remove it). These baby plush toys are also washable - which is nice.
Hanging a towel from a perch like a tent also provides a welcome hiding place for your cuddly bird. There are many things that you can do to make your bird feel safe and "snuggled up." I have three different bird tents in my lovebird's cage in addition to a "coconut house" -- all of which he uses at different times. For three years, he ignored one of them and he is now using it exclusively.
Keeping a toy chest and rotating toys is a a great way to enrich your bird's environment. So don't discard a toy just because your pet is ignoring it. FREE stuff, like pen tops, bottle caps, empty boxes, etc. make GREAT "foot toys" for your pet bird.
Birds that climb into or under "things" may also like a nestbox to roost in (keep warm / sleep in). HOWEVER, if you have a mated pair, they may take the opportunity to breed! Nestboxes may not be the right cage item for anyone having problems with "hormonal" birds -- especially chronic egg layers!
Personal Recommendation: My african grey parrot and lovebird sleep in their Happy Huts EVERY night. This item is a must-have for a lovebird or conure, or any smaller snuggly bird. Young parrots (such as African Greys and macaws) will also eventually accept it. Please note that a pet that is not used to it may ignore it for months. Most will eventually get into it and once they do that, it will likely become a favorite place for them. It offers the additional benefit of providing a warm place when things get chilly outside. |
