My Parrot, My Friend: An Owner's Guide to Parrot Behavior (Behavior Modification Techniques and Their Role in Contemporary Aviculture) (Hardcover)

My Parrot, My Friend is a straightforward book that addresses a growing need for parrot owners and their birds. When difficulties develop in the home, or a clash in avian and human natures makes for unhappy birds and angry owners, many times the sad consequence is painful termination of what could have been a long-term, joyful relationship. Happily, there is an effective remedy and it lies in a program of behavior modification. That program is fully detailed in this well-written, wonderfully detailed text. In addition, the text helps readers to find the right bird so problems can be sidestepped altogether, and it explains which birds not to consider and why.

My Parrot, My Friend shows how parrots grow and develop, and how behavioral problems can start. The book explains behavioral modification, how it works, and how to apply it in specific situations. Case studies and an examination of pertinent issues add considerable interest to the text. These and other special features make this one of the most indispensable reference books you will ever use.

My Parrot, My Friend is the first book to approach the subject in such depth for the lay reader. It will make a significant difference in how pet owners view and relate to their birds and will point the way to happy endings where once there were none.

Hairy Maclary's Rumpus at the Vet

Here's a rumpus, indeed: this beleaguered vet's office may never fully recover from the chaos that ensues when Cassie the cockatoo plucks a hair from the hide of Hairy Maclary ("from Donaldson's Dairy"). This mischievous deed sets in motion a rambunctious, rhyming riot, as various ailing pets all decide to forgo their restraints and cavort in grand fashion. And just as some semblance of order is about to be restored, the culprit seems ready to strike again. This extended poem forms the basis for that relatively rare commodity, a book that tickles the funnybones of parents and children alike. With its amusing alliteration, fanciful names (Noodle the poodle; Barnacle Beasley, the sore and sorely vexed beagle; "The Poppadum kittens from Parkinson Place") and rapid-fire delivery, Dodd's nonsense verse follows quite nicely in the grand tradition of Messrs. Nash and Lear. The pictures are amiably animated and suitably silly, but watch those wonderful waggish words.

Charlie's World: The Improbable Adventures of a Hong Kong Cockatoo and his American Family (Hardcover)

"Charlie's World: The Improbable Adventures of a Hong Kong Cockatoo and His American Family" is an intimate, hilarious and heartbreaking account of a captive wild cockatoo, Charlie, and the quite unusual and prominent family who adopted him. The story stretches from the exotic Far East to the (possibly equally exotic) bedroom community of Scarsdale, New York. For about twenty-five years this surprising and beautiful bird was a part of the lives and conversations of the growing Topping family.

Feathers, Fur and Fins (Paperback)

Feathers, Fur and Fins is a delightful trilogy of highly imaginative stories about a cockatoo, a coyote, and a dolphin respectively. The Moluccan cockatoo named Bikkia finds herself not only separated from her mate but also in captivity in America. With single-minded determination she learns to understand English as she sets out to free herself and be reunited with Hantu Raya in the hope of returning to their native Moluccan island. Bikkia is truly unique as she recounts her stirring adventures to a sympathetic ornithologist in her native tongue. Dr. Z. in turn translates her first-person story - hence, The Moluccan Manuscript.

Valuable Resources on Parrot Behavior and Training:

Training and Behavioral Guidance:

Pet parrots generally present challenges, such as excessive chewing - especially at certain stages in their life. They do discover their beaks as method of "disciplining us" once they are out of the "baby stage" and they can generally be somewhat naughty, and it really is important to learn to understand them and to guide their behavior before an undesirable behavior has been established. Undisciplined parrots will chew on electric wiring potentially causing house fires. They regard anything in your home as a "toy" that can be explored and chewed on; destroying items that you may hold dear or are simply valuable. Even a young bird that has not been neglected and abused requires proper guidance; this becomes even more challenging when it involves a rescued bird that may require rehabilitation.

Lear, Parrots: The Complete Plates (Gebundene Ausgabe)
